Naomi's 3rd Birthday Party

On May 12th we celebrated Naomi's third birthday. I am so thankful that Cyrus has a friend who he loves as much as he loves Naomi. They are the best of friends. I am even more thankful that I like her parents because it would really stink if his best friends parents were people I didn't like. Luckily Naomi's mom is one of my best friends. She and I are so much a like in so many ways, but different enough that we don't annoy each other. I love Sophie and am so thankful that God placed her in my life and blessed us with children at the same time.

Naomi's birthday party was at her grandparents house. We played in the sandbox and played ball. It was gorgeous day outside so the kids had a really good time. My favorite thing was watching Cyrus and Naomi dance with each other they truly crack each other up. Cyrus and Naomi were inseparable the entire afternoon. Here are a few pictures (sorry Ryan I know you like posts that you actually have to read)

He dances just like Bucca
We had such a blast! I am so thankful for their genuine love for each other!

Being Boy

The first weekend after going back to work has been wonderful. I LOVE weekends even though they no longer include sleeping in. Instead they include waking up at dawn's light, nursing a sleepy babe, tiptoeing by Cyrus's room as to not wake him, getting back in bed, snuggling sleeping babe, getting woken up by a sleepy Cyrus climbing into bed with me, snuggling with two beautiful babes oh and getting a not so gentle shake from Cyrus when he is ready to wake up and go downstairs.
This past Saturday Ryan woke up early to go for his long run. Cyrus, Seamus and I snuggled until 8:20 (the latest we have slept in a long time). Then we woke up and tended to our gardens (post coming soon). Once outside I realized that the best way to entertain Cyrus for the morning was by letting him be a boy.
He discovered the joys of playing outside all on his own.
First he played with the hose (after watering our flower garden and his pizza garden). There are no pictures of this activity because water and cameras do not mix.
Then he became a monkey. Literally. As I was putting away the hose Cyrus managed to climb up our Japanese Maple tree. When I looked over he yelled "look mom, I'm a monkey" and swung from a branch and jumped down to the ground (granted its a little tree, but I was impressed).

Love my little monkey
After climbing the tree Cyrus moved on to his next favorite boy past time...Monster Time.  Cyrus has an amazing imagination and just about anything can become a monster or big foot.
The stick Cyrus is playing with is the monster
The monster is eating leaves

The monster is coming after me
When daddy got home we ate breakfast and then went on special errand (more on that later)

Potty Talk

Cyrus still wears a pull up basically because he sometimes has accidents while he is sleeping. However, the fact that a pull-up is available means that he poops either at nap time or bed time. I know I know my big mistake was allowing pull-ups, and I should just throw them away and force him to use the potty. But no matter what we do or say or promise him the kid won’t poop on the potty.
Ryan shared a funny story from last week. Cyrus had woken up from nap time and pooped in his pull-up. He came down stairs to tell Ryan he needed to be cleaned up (at least he does that, right?). So they both headed up the stairs. Cyrus was being the “line leader” and Ryan was the “caboose”. As they are walking up the stairs Ryan noticed that Cyrus was holding the back of his pull-up (the ball of poop ). Ryan asked Cyrus why he was holding his poop and Cyrus responded by saying “I’m holding my poop so it won’t go back up my bum”. We all got a good laugh out of that story!

Brotherly Love

Almost 11 weeks later and Cyrus is still very fond of his little brother. The whole time I was pregnant I couldn’t picture what my boys relationship would be like at the beginning. I was worried Cyrus would be jealous, or indifferent towards his younger brother. I mean how interested can a three year old be in a baby. Babies aren’t really that much fun until at least six months or even a year. Well I was completely wrong. Cyrus is really into his little brother. Sometimes he is a little too into his brother. He is always telling Seamus how much he loves him, and he tells me “Mommy, I’m going to take care of Seamus, I’m going to teach him to wrestle, and play baseball, and basketball” and “Mommy, I love Seamus, I’m a good big brother”. Cyrus spends a lot of the day checking on Seamus and saying “Hello” which is really annoying. He will say hello about a thousand times in a row...which is why it is annoying.
I am so thankful that Cyrus loves his brother so much. There doesn't seem to be any jealousy issues and he genuinely loves being a big brother. Seamus also seems to really like Cyrus. He is very interested in what Cyrus is doing and he even smiles when Cyrus comes to check up on him. I can't wait to watch these two boys grow up together and prayerfully be best friends.

Scooter Time

Our neighbors grandchildren spend a lot of time at their house. We have become very friendly with the kids, and they adore Cyrus. There are many afternoons when Cyrus insists on going out to play with Star, Jasmine and Hayden. Last week Hayden took out a smaller scooter for Cyrus to try out. Cyrus ran to the garage and got his helmet. I snapped a few pictures because he is so adorable. I think we may need to go buy him a scooter!

Our driveway and our neighbor's driveway are both a slight downhill, but it didn't take Cyrus long to get the hang of the scooter. He did fall once or twice but he still managed to have fun. Time to get knee pads and elbow pads!

Muffins for Mom

On Thursday of last week I went to Cyrus's preschool for Muffins with Mom. Cyrus was very excited that mommy was coming to school to enjoy muffins, yogurt and juice. It was a real treat for me to sit down with some other mom's and our dear ones and share stories. Thank you to Mrs. Kelly and all the teachers at Bethel Baptist for hosting such a wonderful morning.

My friend Amy captured this picture of Cyrus and I
We haven't had a picture taken of us in a long time

Can you tell how much I love him?

10 Weeks

Seamus is 2 months, 2 weeks and 1 day old. Time goes by too fast. Not much has changed from my last Seamus post. But I wanted to share some pictures. I noticed towards the end of last week that my baby has a neck. I love when they can hold their heads enough that you can see their sweet little necks. I don't know why, but I do.
the littlest Hurley is big time cute!
I would like to nominate him for best smile
I just want to give him a thousand kisses and then do it again

Everything is Better in 3D

It has been very important to me that Cyrus and I have plenty of time for just the two of us during my maternity leave. We try and have a "Mommy Date" at least once a week, sometimes more. He also has some "Daddy Dates" but the Mommy dates are certainly more important since I am attached to Seamus a lot of the time (literally breast feeding take a lot of time).
Last week I took Cyrus to see the Pirates movie in 3D. The movie wasn't great in my opinion. But Cyrus loves "Wallace & Gromit" so he was excited to see the previews and asked to go to the movie theatre.
We had a great date. I was a little worried that he wouldn't keep the 3D glasses on but he actually kept them on the entire movie...
And after the movie! We had a hard time getting him to take them off. At least we know that if we buy him sunglasses he will actually wear them this year, unlike years past.
Cyrus loved getting his picture taken in his glasses. He was a total ham!
Love my #1! He seriously makes me smile everyday.

First Field Trip

On April 29th Cyrus's preschool class went on their first field trip. It was not a school day for us, but we decided to meet Cyrus's class at the zoo. It was actually cold and sort of rainy by the time we got there, but we still had fun.
Watching for the zoo choo

Our last two trips to the zoo Cyrus hasn't wanted to ride the train
This was our first outing as a family of four. It was so nice to be with all of my boys! I wore Seamus to keep him warm and then wrapped my sweater around us for good measure. Cyrus thought it was really fun to see his friends from school and was excited to see Mrs Donna and Mrs Amy (or as he calls her Mrs. Mimi)

My Thoughts Exactly

I grew up hearing that cleanliness was next to Godliness, and while I do think it is important to have a "clean" home, I am no way neurotic about it. Well don't ask Ryan because he will tell you a dirty house drives me crazy and makes me cranky. I am happiest when the house is clean and tidy, but I am not willing to sacrifice the most important things in this world to obtain "that" pristine house. There are things far more important in this world...
So here is a little reminder...
Mother, oh Mother, come shake out your cloth
empty the dustpan, poison the moth,
hang out the washing and butter the bread,
sew on a button and make up a bed.
Where is the mother whose house is so shocking?
She's up in the nursery, blissfully rocking.
Oh, I've grown shiftless as Little Boy Blue
(lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo).
Dishes are waiting and bills are past due
(pat-a-cake, darling, and peek, peekaboo).
The shopping's not done and there's nothing for stew
and out in the yard there's a hullabaloo
but I'm playing Kanga and this is my Roo.
Look! Aren't her eyes the most wonderful hue?
(lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo).
The cleaning and scrubbing will wait till tomorrow,
for children grow up, as I've learned to my sorrow.
So quiet down, cobwebs. Dust go to sleep.
I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep.

by Ruth Hulburt Hamilton

Today was one of those days that I should have been cleaning. I did manage to clean our front room early in the morning and I cleaned out the bulk trash from our garage before the trash men came. But I was only able to do that because Seamus was sleeping and Cyrus wanted to help me. It was actually really great quality time with Cyrus because he had a "task" to keep him busy. But as the day went on the to do list was put aside and I found myself snuggled in bed holding Seamus, who has been sort of irritable all week. I say "sort of" because his irritable is nothing compared to most babies irritable. However, it is a change for us and where we are use to him soothing himself and being low maintenance, this week has been a lot of holding and snuggling. I don't mind it one bit. And today I snuggled him for four hours straight. It was bliss. I did start to feel guilty about the laundry, the garden, the bathrooms, and then I read the poem above and was so glad that my priorities are in the right place.
With all that said I am so thankful for Ryan. I truly think we compliment each other so well. He always makes sure that there is food to be cooked, and that our kitchen is clean! Because let's face it that is all that really matters when it comes down to domestic tasks...everything else can wait until the boys grow up.

And proof that babies don't keep:

My three year is old is growing up too fast! What I would give for one more day of infancy, one, and two...

8 Weeks Already

Eight weeks already, how can this be? I feel like Seamus was just born, yet that he has been part of our family forever. I'm starting to not remember what life without two children was like.
Seamus is an absolute joy to be around. He is becoming more alert each day and I am amazed at how many milestones he has reached already.

Seamus's Stats at 2 months:
Weight: 12 lbs
Height: 24 inches
Head: 15 1/2 inches

Here are some facts about Seamus
  • He is full of smiles. He smiles while I change him, he returns my smile with his smile and a coo. I love his smile it is a full face smile and it shines
  • He is responding to the sounds around him. Especially Isabelle's shrieking bark (it startles him)
  • He is extremely vocal. He communicates with a wide variety of grunting and cooing...sometimes he cries
  • He says Ah-goo which is my favorite
  • He loves tummy time and can lift his head about 45 degrees
  • He holds his head steady when upright about 96% of the time
  • He can roll on to his side
  • Prefers to sleep on his side
  • Has managed to get him self over to the side of the crib in the side lying position (goodbye crib bumpers)
  • He can track an object of interest. He will lay in his bed and watch the mobile. His eyes and head actually follow his favorite items on the mobile (the alligator). He also will follow Mama's face and Curious George
  • He gets upset if the fish above his swing seat stop rotating, and by upset I mean he makes a little grunt to let us know it is time to turn it back on
  • Seamus isn't on any particular schedule but he eats about every 3 hours from when he wakes up to going to bed. We wake him up at 10 to have one last meal, but he wouldn't wake on his own to eat
  • He typically gets one bottle of breast milk a day that daddy gives him so mommy can go to bed early
  • He is almost sleeping through the night. Goes to bed at 11 and typically wakes at 4 am (in my world that is sleeping through the night).
  • He still poops a lot, 4-6 dirty diapers a day
  • Loves looking at his big brother and will turn his head to watch Cyrus
  • Loves when Isabelle kisses him
Mr. Smiles, not so much here

Sweet sleeping baby

Our Little Photographer

Last week we planned a family trip to Amazement Square in Lynchburg. While I was getting myself and the diaper bag ready I let Cyrus take a few pictures with my camera. He has been asking to use my camera for months and I never say yes (it is a very expensive camera that I don't want to replace). But finally I gave in because 1. he asked using his polite manners and 2. he told me he would be very careful. I was impressed that he knew that I was worried about him not being careful with it.
So I strapped the camera around his neck and let him have at it. I'm actually very impressed with the pictures he took. He was very happy with himself as well. His two favorite people in the world are always either snapping pictures of him or taking video (Auntie Rissa and myself of course) so it only makes sense that he wants to do the same thing.
Here are a few of Cyrus's masterpieces!
He had hard time holding the camera.

But then he corrected for his previous mistake. This is probably the best picture of me in a long time.

He thought it was funny to take a picture of what he was watching on TV

He wanted me to do something "fun"
Now the only problem I'm having is that he wants to use my camera every time he see's it.
